Paddlesport Qualifications and Awards

Come and get your paddling qualifications with Abernethy.  We run a number of qualifications throughout the year at a range of levels.  As you scroll down the page the qualifications get more advanced.  You will generally need to hold the awards above it to be eligible for the qualification you are looking at. 

All of these are through British Canoeing unless otherwise noted.  ILA Scotland funding may be available if you are eligible.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Course

This 1 day course covers the training required to gain a Foundation Safety & Rescue certificate (FSRT).  The course is a pre-requsite for the Paddlesport Instructor and all subsequent courses.

Pre-requisites

  • Boat-based participants need to either hold the current BCU 2 Star Award or be of equivalent ability due to the paddling environment and the boat control required to complete the course
  • Bank-based participants accessing the course are not required to hold the BCU 2 Star Award; however, they should be prepared to fully participate in all relevant aspects of the course
  • Be able to swim in normal paddling clothing suitable for the prevailing conditions
  • Be a minimum of 14 years of age

Paddlesport Instructor 

Formerly known as BCU UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching.  This 4 day course covers the training and assessment required to gain the certificate.

Pre-requisites

  • Be at least 16 years old on the first day of the course
  • Understand the basics of manoeuvring a canoe or kayak, through participation in the sport or from observation.
  • Hold a Foundation Safety & Rescue Test certificate

3 Star White Water Kayak

White Water Safety and Rescue

This 2 day course covers the training and assessment required to gain the White Water Safety and Resuce certificate.  This qualification is necessary for the White Water Kayak Leader and Open Canoe Leader (formerly known as 4 Star) courses. 

Pre-requisites

  • Confident in your ability to paddle on grade 2 water
  • Be confident swimming in normal canoe clothing suitable for a moving water environment
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

White Water Kayak Leader

Formerly known as 4 Star White Water Kayak. 

Pre-requisites for the training

  • Hold a British Canoeing 3 Star White Water Award
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • Have completed the White Water Kayak Leader training
  • Hold a valid White Water Safety and Rescue certificate 
  • Have Evidence of at least 12 river trips in 4 different locations that include: 6 grade 3 trips as a member of a group and 6 grade 2-3 trips as an assistant leader
  • Hold a current 2 day first aid qualification

Open Canoe Leader

Formerly known as 4 Star Open Canoe. 

Pre-requisites for the training

  • Hold a British Canoeing 3 Star Open Canoe Award
  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • Have completed the Open Canoe Leader training
  • Hold a valid White Water Safety and Rescue certificate 
  • Evidence of at least 12 river trips in 4 different locations that include: 3 grade 2 trips as a member of a group, 3 open water journeys with winds up to force 4 as a member of a group, 3 grade 1-2 trips as an assistant leader, 3 open water journeys with winds up to force 3 as an assistant leader. Some of these trips should include overnight camps.
  • Hold a current 2 day first aid qualification

Paddlesport Leader

Formerly known as the BCU UKCC L2 Paddlesport Coaching Certificate.

Pre-requisites for the training

  • Be a Paddlesport Instructor
  • 2 Star multi discipline (Boat-based Coach)
  • A BCU 3 Star Certificate in either single blade discipline or double blade discipline (Boat-based Coach)
  • Be 17 years of age or above
Pre requisites for the assessment
  • Hold a 1 day first aid certificate recognised by the BCU
  • Hold a BCU 3 Star Certificate’s in your primary discipline and competences to 3 star in your alternative discipline (single blade & double bladed discipline) (boat based coach)
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have completed Paddlesport Leader Training
  • Have completed 20 logged hours of relevant coaching experience
  • Have a Criminal Records Disclosure (PVG
  • Have attended a Sports Coach UK Safeguarding (or equivalent Child Protection training)
  • Have completed assessment tasks in candidate assessment pack
  • Have completed one CPD unit of your choice

Moderate Water Kayak

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • Moderate Water Kayak Training completed
  • A minimum of 10 logged coaching hours in the sheltered water environment post holding BCU UKCC Level 2
  • A minimum of 20 leading hours in the specific moderate water environment, post holding White Water Kayak Leader.

Moderate Water Open Canoe

Pre-requisites for the training

  • Complete a Moderate Water Registration (CR Form)
  • Be a Paddlesport Leader 
  • Be a White Water Kayak Leader or Open Canoe Leader 
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Hold a recognised 8 hour first aid certificate

Pre-requisites for the assessment

  • Moderate Water Open Canoe Training completed
  • A minimum of 10 logged coaching hours in the sheltered water environment post holding Paddlesport Leader
  • A minimum of 20 leading hours in the specific moderate water environment, post holding Open Canoe Leader.  (In Open Canoe this is divided into 10 hours leading journeys on lakes/lochs in moderate water conditions and 10 hours on moving water)
