This one-year, full-time course is fully residential and gives you the opportunity to gain a great range of qualifications in 7 outdoor sports. The stunning wild places of Scotland become your playground as you live and train with your fellow students. The course is primarily based at the Abernethy Ardgour School of Adventure Leadership near Fort William, but will also include 6 weeks skiing in Switzerland during the winter and 12 weeks of work placement during the summer which is split between our four Scottish adventure centres.
The course is primarily aimed at Christians who are looking for a career in outdoor activity instruction but many other people have completed the course over the years as a gap year before or after university. An important part of the year is the opportunity for personal Christian growth and an insight into the value of outdoor activities in Christian ministry.

"They say ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ and it certainly did on my instructor training course with Abernethy. With so many memorable experiences it is hard to capture one, but from wet mountain days to rock climbing in the sun and skiing in Switzerland this has been the best year of my life. One of my favourite days was near the beginning of the course where we went on a canoe expedition. It started raining but suddenly a rainbow appeared over the Loch we were paddling on, it was a great reminder of the amazing promises God has told us and the beautiful outdoors He has given us to enjoy. There were many challenges from tough days in poor weather, to the difficulties of learning new skills but God helped me through these to persevere with His strength and through His encouraging Word." - Emily, Trainee Instructor

The Abernethy School of Adventure Leadership is recognised as an approved learning provider for Professional and Career Development Loans. Our learning provider identification number is: 21694.
Professional and Career Development Loans are commercial bank loans that you can use to help pay for work-related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Government will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. You will then need to start repaying the loan as you would any other commercial loan product. You can use the loan to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. As the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, you should make sure you have investigated all the funding options that may be open to you to ensure you take an informed decision about whether the loan is right for you. For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit the GOV.UK website or contact the National Careers Service on 0800 100 900.
