A night in the bothy on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula on the west coast of Scotland near Fort William can be part of your Abernethy Ardgour stay.
This unique experience of sleeping in the bothy or in tents outside is a great way to give your pupils a safe but challenging wilderness experience. Integrated with your normal activity programme, pupils would walk or canoe to the bothy, set up camp and enjoy some meals in the wild before returning home. This optional extra is a great way to explore the less well known areas around the shores of Loch Linnhe and learn some new skills while encouraging their inner adventurer!
"[The] Bothy was something new, unique and very worthwhile. Cooking was excellent – not something they normally get to do. Good variety of different skills over the week with kids helping each other e.g. zip wire. Walk to bothy was a good challenge." – Teacher, Deans Primary School
During an Ardgour residential stay, different pupils will canoe (weather dependent) or walk out to the bothy each evening. The teachers are welcome to join in the experience too.
Once we arrive at the bothy, we set up camp and start to explore the surrounding area. This could be through wide games or challenges before cooking our own dinner. Using trangias and basic camp skills, we create a safe environment for children to take ownership of their meal that evening and feel like they've really had an adventure!
We will round the evening off around the campfire with hot chocolate and marshmallows, before settling down to a night in the great outdoors.
In the morning, before returning to the centre, we have breakfast and pack up camp before travelling back to join the rest of the group and share our experiences.
The Wild Adventure will take one activity group an afternoon and the following morning. When the group returns to the centre, they unpack, have showers and get changed. There will sometimes be time for team challenges before lunch.
We will provide the equipment required – including sleeping bags – and will work with you to devise an educational, fun programme that suits the age and stage of your pupils.

All of our programmes are flexible and can be tailored to fit your needs. Pricing will be dependent on activity sessions included.
Our Wild Adventure programme allows more flexibility for your group: the Wild Adventure programme allows us to increase our capacity slightly to accommodate larger groups.
