Teacher Information

Helping children achieve and grow.

Abernethy has been helping children learn through means of outdoor education for 5 decades. Thousands of young people benefit from our high quality staff and exceptional program provision every year.

Learning outdoors and a residential experience with Abernethy will offer many opportunities to deliver outcomes for the Curriculum for Excellence, including:

  • Building self confidence and self esteem
  • Team working and reviewing skills
  • Engaging and developing relationships with peers and staff
  • A great sense of adventure

All of our activities can help children work towards the four capacities as laid out in the curriculum for excellence – to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors. We can meet criteria for health and wellbeing, literacy, religious and moral education and sciences and learning about the environment.

Preview visit

If you haven’t been to one of our centres before, why not arrange a preview visit so you can see how we work and meet our team? The peace of mind that this offers you, your colleagues and parents is invaluable. Call or email the centre you are considering visiting to arrange a time or fill in the contact form on our bookings page.

FAQ's

What's the difference between the centres?

Abernethy operates three centres.  Our residential adventure centres, one in the North and one in the South of Scotland, accommodate around 50-70 guests. Our centre on the West coast specialises in retreats and can accommodate 18 people.

What does it mean that Abernethy is a group of Christian centres?

It means that our staff teams are predominantly made up of Christians, and our faith motivates us to do the work that we do. Our own events often have Christian themes, but our centres are open for visitors of all faiths and none to enjoy. If you are joining a school group please see this page for more information.

What should my children bring?

Bring clothing appropriate for the season your group is visiting, although extra layers are encouraged in case of a cold or wet snap. School groups will be given a comprehensive kit list.
