On this autumn retreat we will explore the topic of joy with C S Lewis (autumn was his favourite season!). We will explore the different aspects of the subject that he so delights in: finding joy in creation, discovering how we can share the joy, learning about different modes and manifestations of joy, and anticipating the joy of heaven. In his autobiography, based around the concept of joy, Lewis said ‘in a sense the central story of my life is about nothing else’.
The retreat is led by Andy Swinford, author of ‘The Practice of Joy: insights from the stories of C S Lewis’ (Grove) and contributor to ‘The Christian Tradition in English Literature’ (Zondervan). Andy will lead us on an exploration of the joy-filled life and writings of C S Lewis (no prior knowledge needed!). The wind of joy breathes through Lewis’s writing, and we will draw close to God by using his insights as jumping off points for our own experiences of joyous wonder. There will be plenty of space for reflection, walking, prayer, and enjoying God’s wonderful creation in the beautiful surroundings of Kilmalieu.
Kilmalieu occupies a stunning position on the shore of Loch Linnhe. It is a renovated eighteenth-century hunting lodge with a mixture of comfortable single, twin and family bedrooms. Food is home-made and consistently praised for its quality. Guests have access to a small library, art room, lounge, chapel and gym – and are free to explore the estate, with its glorious mix of mountains, coastline and woodland.
